So far this year I’ve made:
- A skirt from a top
- A top from a skirt
- A wall hanging from pillow cases
- A head tie from a belt
But what do you do with your old clothes? Do you charity shop them? Pass them down to your siblings (or your mum in my case…..oh yes, ’tis true) or do you throw them away?
Most of us have clothing items or shoes that we just can’t bear to throw away for whatever reason. It could be a sentimental piece, that is filled with memories, but no matter how ragged it is you just can’t let it go. Well, I support that! We live in an age where it is so easy to throw items away once they’re out of fashion or we don’t like them anymore. But so far fashion keeps repeating itself, for, example this summer showcases the return of 80’s or floral prints for example-stuff that you or your dear parents may have had “back in the day”.
Have a look at a recent article in The Ecologist, about half way down it suggests having sewing lessons etc, so we can make old clothes into new things. To me, this is nothing new, in fact it’s the story of my life. There’s definately a sense of achievement when you make something, wear it, and it looks damn good!

Bird cage necklace I made from an old Christmas Tree decoration...I later saw a smaller version in Topshop for £12!
